National Evaluation of Peer Mediation: Key Findings
The Resolution Centre is proud to share the results of the first national evaluation of Peer Mediation, led by the Civil Mediation Council (CMC) in partnership with Scottish Mediation. As members of the UK Peer Mediation Network, we invited Jersey schools to take part—helping build the clearest picture yet of the impact Peer Mediation is having on children, staff, and school communities.
Resolving Conflict in Schools: A Foundation for Healthier Futures
The report highlights the rapid, positive effect Peer Mediation is having across the UK. By equipping children with the skills to listen, empathise and resolve disagreements early, schools are seeing a shift toward calmer environments and stronger relationships.
Lady Justice Asplin DBE writes:
“Conflict resolution is a life skill with enormous potential — from reducing school exclusions to supporting mental health and helping create a more cohesive society. The sooner peer mediation is embedded in education, the sooner its benefits can ripple out. It really cannot happen soon enough.”
What the Report Shows
A robust endorsement of Peer Mediation, including:
- Independent cost–benefit analysis demonstrating clear value for money and very high satisfaction among participating schools.
- Insight into the training and guidelines used by Peer Mediators.
- Exploration of oracy skills and how mediation strengthens communication, confidence and empathy.
- Evidence that Peer Mediation supports schools facing strained resources: poor attendance, rising suspensions, behavioural challenges, SEN pressures, the impact of smartphones, and growing concerns for young people’s mental health.
